Action:
It’s a players turn to act. A dealer might say “Your action, sir,” if a player doesn’t realize that it’s his or her turn.
Ante:
A little part of a bet put down by each player to build the pot at the beginning of each poker hand.
Burn:
This describes the process of issuing the top card from the deck, face down. This is carried out between every wagering round prior to handing out the next community playing card(s). This acts as a security against players recognizing or glimpsing the next playing card to be employed on the board.
Complete Hand:
A hand that’s made up out of all five cards – a flush, straight, full house or a straight flush
House:
The casino or other dwelling that hosts the game.
Inside Straight:
A poker hand consisting of four playing cards required to create a straight with one card in the centre missing.
Kicker:
The unpaired playing card used to decide the better of two near-equivalent set of cards
Muck:
The pile of playing cards either burned or folded in front of the dealer.
Open-ended straight:
A hand containing four consecutive cards that with the addition of a single card at either end will make a straight.
Pocket:
The cards that only you can observe.
Protect:
Putting a chip on your cards to signify that you are still in the game to make sure that your set of cards is not inadvertently mucked by the dealer or fouled by a discarded hand.
Quads:
Four of a kind.
Rank:
A numerical worth given to a card (not the suit).
Tell:
A clue or hint that a participant accidentally reveals concerning their poker hand.
Toke:
A small amount of money given by the player who wins a pot to the dealer.
Trips:
Three of the same ranking.
Variance:
The up and down swings in your bankroll, wider swings in your bankroll means your variance is larger.
